SUSTAINABILITY

As a fashion brand we do believe that social equity and ecological sustainability are natural and fundamental for modern society and businesses.

Therefore our goal will always be respecting the men and women who make our clothes and and to always doing our very best to limit effectively our impact on the environment.

OUR GARMENTS

All of our products are produced in Asian factories which are GOTS-certified and audited by the Fair Wear Foundation. They are either made of organic cotton, organic cotton with recycled polyester or recycled cotton with recycled polyester. All garments are  also ÖKO-TEX Standard 100 certified.  And we are proud to be able to say that they are printed and embroidered in our hometown Hamburg.

ON DEMAND

Our vision to be an ecologically sustainable brand starts with our business model of manufacturing on demand. Why does this matter? We are preventing overproduction. Overproduction does not only lead to goods being stored in warehouses for a prolonged time in the absence of customer demand but it also means we can minimize waste by reducing unnecessary material in general.

How is this applicable to you as a customer of Youth Lagoon? Only once you have placed your order, we start the printing and embroidering processes. As a result, you can be sure that a Youth Lagoon garment is truly unique and made just for you.

OUR SKATEBOARD & SURFSKATE DECKS

Our skateboard decks are proudly handmade in a small woodshop in Germany. The only imported ingredient is Canadian hard maple which is FSC® certified (Forest Stewardship Council).  Each board is cold pressed, glued without dangerous chemicals or other harmful substances and printed with water-based colours.

We are very glad and over the moon to find a partner in Germany who shares our value towards sustainability and our love for skating. These guys make your deck with “Herzblut” and the deepest care.

WHAT ELSE WE DO

We choose accessories with the greatest care. Our hang tags are made of recycled craft paper and attached with recycled polyester ribbons.

We do plastic-free packaging. Therefore, all garments won’t be packaged in plastic bags but will be wrapped in tissue paper for shipping.

GOTS CERTIFICATION

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is recognised as the world's leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibres. It defines high-level environmental criteria along the entire organic textiles supply chain and requires compliance with social criteria as well.

FAIR WEAR FOUNDATION

Fair Wear Foundation (Fair Wear) is an independent, non-profit organisation that works to improve conditions for workers in garment factories. Fair Wear is active in 15 production countries in Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe.

To do this, Fair Wear focuses on garment production, specifically sewing, cutting and trimming processes–the most labour intensive parts of the supply chain. Fair Wear works with 130 member brands, who are committed to finding a fairer way to make clothes, and engage directly with factories, trade unions, NGOs and governments to find answers to problems others think are unsolvable. Together with it members Fair Wear is  stitching together new solutions across the supply chain to make fashion fair for everyone.

ÖKO-TEX STANDARD 100

STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® is one of the world's best-known labels for textiles tested for harmful substances. It stands for customer confidence and high product safety.

If a textile article carries the STANDARD 100 label, you can be certain that every component of it, i.e. every thread, button and other accessories, has been tested for harmful substances and that the article is therefore harmless in human ecological terms.

The test is conducted by independent OEKO-TEX® partner institutes on the basis of extensive OEKO-TEX® criteria catalog. In the test they take into account numerous regulated and non-regulated substances, which may be harmful to human health.

ORGANIC COTTON

Organic cotton is grown from non-genetically modified plants, and without the use of any synthetic agricultural chemicals such as fertilizers or pesticides aside from the ones allowed by the certified organic labeling. Furthermore, organic cotton needs less water than standard cotton which encourages the health of soils, ecosystems and people by using natural processes.

GLOBAL RECYCLED STANDARD

The GRS is an international, voluntary and full product standard that sets out requirements for third-party certification of recycled content, chain of custody, social and environmental practices and chemical restrictions.  The goal of the GRS is to increase use of recycled materials (in the case of polyester, from plastic bottles, and for cotton, from cutting waste) in products and to reduce/eliminate the harm caused by its production.

FSC® ( FOREST STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL)

FSC® runs a global forest certification system with two key components - Forest Management and Chain of Custody.

The FSC® system allows businesses and consumers to identify, purchase and use wood, paper and other forest products made with materials from well-managed-forest and/or recycled sources.
